It is one of the reasons why many young people have been unable to put down their mobile phones by keeping their latest information on friends and relatives in the first place. However, according to a study published in the Journal of Psychology Today, the use of mobile phones at night affects sleep, increases depression and reduces self-esteem and coping ability.
The more you use your phone at night, the less sleep you have.
The study lasted for 4 years and tracked 1,101 high school students aged 13 to 16, with 43% males and 57% females. The vertical potential growth model is used to detect the relationship between changes in adolescents using mobile phones at night, changes in sleep behavior, and changes in health status (depression, externalization, self-esteem, and coping ability). It was found that over time, the use of nighttime mobile phones was positively correlated with poor sleep behavior and led to subsequent increases in depression and externalization behavior and reduced self-esteem and coping ability, accompanied by lower academic performance.
According to a study conducted by Bridgewater University in Massachusetts in 2014 for 642 freshmen, 80% of men and women admitted that they often stayed up late in high school. When parents thought they were sleeping, they spent an average nightly. Play mobile phone for 1 to 2 hours. 42% of people who often stay up all night do not suffer from depression, accounting for 25% of all children.
World Health Organization officially lists video addiction as a mental illness
Chen Huacai, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Taoyuan Sanatorium of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, said that the content of young people's continuous use of mobile phones is mostly mobile games and social networking sites. Many teenagers are immersed in the virtual world, teaming up with netizens, collaborating to retreat, or in the community. Communication with people is a social pattern of the new generation. However, in the newly released International Classification of Diseases by the World Health Organization, video addiction has been officially classified as a mental illness. Many young people can talk in the online community, but they don't know how to express their ideas when they face each other.
When adolescents return to real life, are they able to adjust themselves and know how to communicate with others? Dr. Chen Wencai reminded that new technologies often bring new problems. It is difficult to use mobile phones in modern life, but parents can try to remind young people to maintain the importance of normal work and rest. Our brains have a certain circadian rhythm, and feel uncomfortable when going abroad to change sleep due to jet lag. Regardless of depression or anxiety, "sleeping status" is an important indicator for judging adolescents' physical and mental health. If the sleep condition is abnormal, parents can consider seeking professional assistance at the right time.
Parents lead by example
Ye Yaxin, director of the Dongshi Foundation Mental Health Center, said that the above studies prove that teenagers who play mobile phones day and night are prone to mental health problems. At this stage, teenagers are mostly important to others, and the mobile phone is almost an important part of making friends with friends or making friends. Tools, parents do not need to prevent children from using a mobile phone, but it is important to let the child know the correct and limited use.
If your parents decide to buy a mobile phone, be sure to set health practices (for example, if you have finished your homework, you will play until 11 o'clock at the latest, then enforce it), and the most important thing is to lead by example. Don’t stare at your phone for a long time, turn around But the child is asked to put down the phone, but the effect is greatly reduced.
